There is something about the countryside that dogs understand straight away — the open space, the new smells, the long walks with their favourite people. At Mulino Lodge, our pasture farm above Kniveton near Ashbourne, every one of our pods and our cabin welcomes dogs, so your four-legged companion comes too. Right on the edge of the Peak District, with walks from the gate and dog-friendly pubs within easy reach, it is an easy and relaxed place to bring the whole family.
Every pod and the lodge is dog-friendly
All of our accommodation at Mulino Lodge is dog-friendly — the Ewe Lodge cabin and the Bluebell, Damson and Lavender pods alike. Up to two dogs are welcome in each, for a small dog charge.
As this is a working farm with sheep, cattle & horses grazing the surrounding fields, we ask that dogs are kept on a lead and under control while on site. A bridleway runs from the farm gate, so there is somewhere to stretch their legs from the moment you set off. Inside, the pods are warm and comfortable — a calm, restful place for your dog to settle after a day in the fresh air.
Walks straight from the farm gate
One of the real pleasures of staying here is being able to set off on foot without driving anywhere first. Quiet lanes and bridleways lead away from the farm, and the short climb up Madge Hill — a favourite with guests — rewards you with wide panoramic views.
For a proper outing, our guest walk down to the Red Lion at Kniveton is a scenic field-and-track route with a dog-friendly, award-winning pub at the halfway point. Further afield, Dovedale and its famous stepping stones, the traffic-free Tissington Trail and the climb up Mam Tor all make memorable days out with a dog in tow.
Dog-friendly pubs and places to eat
The area is well set up for walkers with dogs, and there are many good spots to stop for lunch or an evening meal, here are just a few-
- The Red Lion, Kniveton — a traditional village pub and multiple CAMRA award-winner for real ale and cider, with good homemade food and a warm welcome for dogs.
- The Old Dog, Thorpe — a charming country pub near Dovedale with locally sourced food and a beer garden.
- The Tunnel Café, Ashbourne — breakfasts, lunches and homemade cakes, right by the start of the Tissington Trail.
Dog-friendly days out
When you fancy venturing a little further, there is plenty to do without leaving the dog behind:
- Carsington Water — a roughly eight-mile lakeside loop for walking or cycling, with dogs on leads and a café at the visitor centre.
- Chatsworth — dogs are welcome across the gardens and parkland.
- Crich Tramway Village — dogs are welcome, and can even ride the vintage trams alongside you.
What to pack for your dog
A little planning makes the stay easier. Bring a lead and harness for the countryside walks, food and water bowls, and a few favourite treats. A bed or blanket keeps your dog cosy in the heated pod, and a towel is invaluable for drying off muddy paws after a wet walk. A tether for outside time on the decking is handy too.
A comfortable base for you and your dog
After a day in the fresh air, the pleasure is coming back to somewhere warm and quiet. Settle in by the firepit with the valley view, hang the wet things in the drying room, and let the dog curl up beside you. Whether you choose the Ewe Lodge cabin or one of the Bluebell, Damson or Lavender pods, each is a genuine retreat for you and your companion.
