May is shaping up to be a brilliant month in Ashbourne — and as we’re just a short drive up the road at Mulino Lodge, there’s never been a better reason to plan a stay and explore.

From age-old traditions to exciting new openings, here’s what’s happening on your doorstep this month.

Events Not to Miss

Tissington Well Dressing — 14th May One of the most beautiful and unique traditions in Derbyshire, the Tissington Well Dressing sees the village’s wells decorated with intricate floral mosaics made entirely from natural materials. It’s been taking place for centuries and is well worth a short detour — the village itself is picture-postcard perfect.

Ashbourne Triathlon — 17th May Swim, bike and run around the town as athletes take on the Ashbourne Triathlon. Even if you’re not taking part, it’s a fantastic atmosphere and a great reason to be in town on the day.

Artbourne — 31st May Ashbourne’s very own art trail returns, featuring over 100 artists showcasing their work across the town. If you’re looking for something creative and a little different, Artbourne is a real highlight of the local calendar.

New Places to Explore

Ashbourne has seen a flurry of exciting new businesses open their doors in recent weeks.

Brown Onion Books has arrived as a welcome addition — a proper independent bookshop with a carefully curated selection. Perfect for picking up a read to take back to the pod.

Becalmed is a gorgeous gift and wellbeing shop stocking natural beauty products, clothing and thoughtful gifts. Well worth a browse.

Asia Table brings a new dining option to the town, offering East Asian food in what sounds like a genuinely memorable setting.

Spoilt for Choice This Spring

Beyond the events and new openings, Ashbourne’s a great base for getting out into the countryside. The Tissington Trail — the old railway line stretching 13 miles through the White Peak — is just minutes away and equally brilliant on foot or bike. Don’t forget, we’ve got the bike storage at the Mulino Lodge.

For a pint after your adventures, House of Beer on the market town’s high street is the go-to spot for craft ales, wines and gins — and they often host quiz nights and live music too.

A Town on the Rise

Ashbourne has been shortlisted as a finalist in the 2026 Urbanism Awards, in the Great Town / Small City category. It’s a well-deserved recognition of what makes this place so special, and assessment visits are due this summer.
